Security

We understand that going through Security at any airport can be a challenge and we apologize for any inconvenience to our passengers and ask that you understand the necessity for these actions in order to maintain a safe environment.  You can learn about the latest security procedures and restrictions on the TSA website at http://www.tsa.gov/.  We encourage you to visit this website before you fly to find out how to pack, dress and prepare for your trip so that you can go through the security process as quickly as possible.

Air travelers can carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints as part of TSA's 3-1-1 rule.  With certain exceptions for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, baby formula, breast milk, and juice, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, the following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols you want to carry through a security checkpoint.

  1. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers.
  2. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
  3. Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening.

If you need larger amounts of liquids, gels and aerosols such as toothpaste or shampoo, please place them in your luggage and check them with your airline.

Additional Tips for Getting Through Security

  • Check with your airline for recommended arrival times. Recommended times change with each airport.  At Tri-Cities, plan to arrive an hour and a half before departure, then allow at least 15 minutes to complete the security process and be at your gate ready to board the aircraft 30 minutes before your departure time. Passengers must be checked in at least 30 minutes before flight departure. An airline will deny boarding if a passenger tries to check in less than 30 minutes before flight departure.
  • Passengers should keep all medicine with them in their purse, pocket or carry-on bag.
  • All valuables should be carried on the aircraft, including jewelry, electronics, currency and breakables. Passengers may want to check with the airline about limitations of liability for damaged or lost items.
  • Carry all film (including cameras with film) in your carry-on baggage to avoid screening equipment for checked baggage. Ask the TSA employee, before your bag goes through screening, to please check film and cameras by hand.
  • Place identification tags with your name, address and phone number both inside and outside all baggage, including carry-on, electronic equipment and personal items.
  • To move efficiently through the security checkpoint, place all metal items in your carry-on bag; remove your lap-top computer and camcorders from baggage and place in bins separate from the case.
  • Passengers may not put prohibited items in carry-on baggage. These items include weapons, explosives, incendiaries, pocket knives, lighters and scissors.  Click here for a list of permitted and prohibited items.
  • Avoid over packing baggage to prevent items from spilling out if the baggage is opened for inspection. Make sure all bags can be closed easily.
  • Bring photo identification and be prepared to show it at check-in and security screening points.
  • Take off your outer coat or jacket and place it in a bin. Also, be prepared to remove footwear.
  • Passengers with a medical implant or other device that might set off a metal detector alarm should bring a written statement of the condition, official document or doctor's note that includes the doctor's contact information. Tell the screener about special circumstances before proceeding through the checkpoint.
  • Avoid wearing certain clothing and accessories that contain metal and may set off a metal detector alarm. Place them in your carry-on baggage until you clear security.
  • Contact your airline to find out about its baggage policy. Airlines apply restrictions on checked and carry-on baggage, including the number of pieces, size and weight.
  • Only ticket holding passengers with valid boarding passes may enter the concourse.
