(Blountville, Tenn.)—During a called meeting Thursday, the Tri-Cities Airport Commission determined that Staci Robinson, the current food and beverage provider at the Airport, had not met the standards established in the operating agreement and moved to terminate the contract.

Earlier in the summer, Robinson notified the Commission that she wanted to end her restaurant operation lease effective August 16; however, the operating agreement does not allow for an early termination by Robinson without incurring liability for failing to meet contractual obligations.

After receiving numerous complaints from customers, the Airport Commission notified Robinson on July 3rd about deficiencies to be corrected and met with the operator several times in an effort to resolve the problems. After evaluating the issues at the end of the 30-day notice period, the Commission chose to end the existing agreement and seek proposals for a new food and beverage vendor.

"This is an unfortunate situation, but our goal is to provide quality food and beverage service to everyone who uses the airport," said Patrick Wilson, TCRA executive director. "We know the lack of restaurant and bar facilities at the Airport will affect our passengers, and we apologize for the inconvenience during this interim period. We will proceed as quickly as possible to evaluate proposals and select a new provider, but this is a lengthy process, and we are required to go out for competitive proposals."

Wilson estimates it could be early 2008 before a new food and beverage provider will be selected and operating. To bridge the gap in food service, the Airport Commission voted to enter into an agreement with Canteen Vending Co., the world’s largest vending company, to offer fresh, high quality products. Vending will be located in the existing restaurant area and in the concourse past security.

In addition to traditional snack items, Canteen Vending will offer breakfast biscuits, a variety of fresh sandwiches from well-known restaurant brands like Blimpie and Tony Roma’s, salads and Starbucks coffee. Prices will range from $1.50 to $3. Food will be made fresh and stocked daily.
